Template Website or Custom: What a Clinic Should Choose

A template or website builder suits a practice with one or two doctors. When a clinic has several specialities, branches, online booking into the MIS and advertising, a template becomes more expensive. How to decide.

A template or website builder is the quickest way to have a website: you pick a design, drop in the text and photos, and launch within days. For a one-doctor practice that is often enough. But when a clinic has several specialities, dozens of doctors, online booking and advertising, a template starts to cost more than it seemed to at the start: in time, in lost bookings and in dependence on the platform. Let us see where the line is.

Short answer

A template is fine while the website is a business card. You need a custom website when the website has to book patients and show where they came from.

  • Template or builder: a practice or 1–3 doctors, a few services, booking by phone, no advertising.
  • Custom website: several specialities or branches, a doctor directory, online booking into the MIS or CRM, several languages, advertising and SEO.
  • In both cases the domain, text, photos and access must be registered to the clinic.

In plain wordsA template is like a rented furnished room: you move in within a day, but you cannot move the walls. A custom website is like your own premises: it takes longer to fit out, but it is built for your flow of patients.

When a template is quite enough

  • You are a practice or a small clinic: one to three doctors, a few services.
  • Patients book by phone or through a profile on a medical portal, and that suits you.
  • The website only needs to let a patient find your address, opening hours, prices and phone number.
  • You run no advertising, or it leads to social networks rather than the website.

In that case a template is a sensible choice. The main thing is that the domain is registered to you, and that you can take the text and photos with you.

When a template starts to cost more

Several specialities and dozens of doctors. A template gives one structure for everyone: “Services”, “Doctors”, “Contacts”. A clinic with therapy, diagnostics and surgery needs navigation in which a patient gets from a speciality to a particular doctor and a booking in a few clicks, with filters by speciality, experience and appointment day.

Online booking into your system. In a template, booking is most often a button on top of the design or someone else’s widget. Whether the request reaches your MIS or CRM depends on what the platform allows. More in the article on the website and the MIS.

Advertising and analytics. When a clinic pays for advertising, what matters is not “how many visitors” but “how many bookings and from which channel”. In templates the booking event often cannot be passed to analytics without workarounds.

Several languages and branches. A separate page for every branch and every language with its own address is something templates are rarely built for.

Pages built for search. A patient searches for “dentist + district” or a specific service. Separate pages for services, doctors and branches must be built into the structure from day one, not added after launch.

Dependence on the platform. If the website lives on the vendor’s platform, moving often means rebuilding everything from scratch. The subscription, limits and rules are also theirs.

Questions clinic owners ask

Can we start with a template and move to a custom website later?

You can. Just keep in mind that moving is a separate project: carrying over text, page addresses and redirects so that you do not lose Google rankings. The sooner you know where you are heading, the cheaper the move.

Is a custom website always expensive and slow?

It depends on scale: the number of doctors, branches and languages, and whether MIS integration is needed. For a clinic with several specialities and 12 doctors, the configurator on our page shows roughly 8–15 weeks from analysis to launch. The price is fixed before work starts, so there are no surprises in the invoice. What it depends on is covered in the article on clinic website cost.

And is a ready-made WordPress theme a template or a custom website?

Somewhere in between. A theme gives you a design, but booking, the doctor directory and analytics still have to be set up. Check how heavy the theme is: overloaded themes open slowly on a phone, and patients look for a doctor from their phones.

Will we be able to change prices and doctors ourselves?

It should be so in both cases. On a custom WordPress website the admin area is set up around your structure: prices, doctors, schedules and promotions change in minutes, and the website comes with a guide on how to manage it.

For your developer

  • Structure. Record types for doctors, services and branches with their relationships, not just a set of pages; separate addresses for each language and branch.
  • Booking. Integration with the MIS or CRM if there is an API, or a booking module that stores requests on the website.
  • Analytics. The booking event in GA4 and ad accounts without personal data; the source is stored together with the request.
  • Speed. A theme without unnecessary libraries, Core Web Vitals checked on real phones.
  • Ownership. Domain, hosting, code and accounts in the client’s name, code in a repository the client can access.

If you would rather not do it yourself

We build custom clinic websites on WordPress: a structure built around your specialities, doctors and branches, online booking into the MIS or CRM, and a report of how many bookings each source brings. Work goes on a private copy of the site, and the website, code and access belong to the clinic. Tell us about your clinic: within two working days we send a structure review, an indicative timeline and a price, with no obligation. The price is fixed before work starts.
